Chapter Nineteen
The energy that blasted outward was different than what they had felt before. It was familiar in some ways, though, and it left his skin tingling.
âIs that a mage attacking the dragon?â Rowanâs voice was quiet and sounded a little odd. He understood, as he felt much the same way, and probably for the same reason.
âI think so,â Laric said.
âIf a mage can attack a dragon, then why didnât the headmaster do it?â Rowan asked.
She wasnât wrong. He thought about what he had overheard when heâd been by himself near the school. What if the headmaster was somehow involved? It hadnât sounded like her, but what if someone there had been working with Korthal, someone who was tied to the school?
He didnât have those answers, and at this point, he wasnât sure he could ever have those answers.
âNo mage can take on a dragon,â Iveris said.
Laric looked at the dragon and realized maybe she was right. There had just been that one burst of wind.
Which meant maybe there was only one mage.
A single mage taking on a dragon wasnât going to go well for the mage.
âLetâs keep moving,â Malcolm said, motioning back down the hill and over toward Laricâs farmâand the shed. âI donât want to be here for a dragon battle. Besides, we saw the Korthal soldiers. We arenât going to be able to do anything.â
Rowan leaned close to him. âHeâs not wrong. Letâs get moving.â
As much as the idea of watching a dragon battle intrigued him, it also was a terrible idea to linger, because it was the kind of thing that would only end up with them getting caught in the middle of something they had no reason to be a part of.
So he turned, and he began to run. And as he did, he felt that heat continuing to sweep around him. There was a considerable energy to it.
They had to get back to the shed and hide.
Another burst of wind slammed into him, making him stagger. The force of it was impressive and brutal, and required that he pay attention to what he was doing, mostly so he could be ready for it. But then he felt the wind shifting. It wasnât targeting them, not the way it seemed. It was targeting the dragon.
It had to be, but how could it? And how could he feel it so distinctly?
The dragon let out a cry. Its wings struck the air, as if it was trying to maintain its position.
The only reason Korthal had not been able to attack had been because of the Mage Society. Laric had never really considered how, or what that meant, but having seen the might of the dragon, he found it difficult to even consider the possibility that any mage would be able to overpower it.
Until now.
Each blast of wind rotated, spinning in a way that worked counter to the others, as each one threatened to topple the dragon.
The dragon started to spiral.
Laric could see a darkened figure seated atop the creature.
